A Small Country with a Large Diaspora

According to the 2021 census, Croatia has approximately 3.9 million residents; however, the number of Croatians residing abroad is expected to be several million more, scattered across Europe, the Americas, Australia, and New Zealand. The disparity between a tiny homeland and a big diaspora stems from many migratory waves, including economic emigration from the late 19th century, political exile during the Yugoslav period, and post-1990s movements after independence and war. The result is a global network of Croatian communities with strong cultural ties to the Adriatic.

Croats account for more than 90% of the population, with Serbs, Bosniaks, Roma, and other minorities making up smaller shares. Roman Catholicism is the predominant religion, with roughly four-fifths of citizens identifying as Catholic, influencing public festivals and local customs. Croatian diaspora communities generally maintain their identity through Catholic churches, cultural clubs, and language schools in countries such as Germany, Austria, Canada, and Australia, where they have developed close-knit communities.

Travelers encounter this social reality in subtle ways. Tourist workers commonly communicate in numerous languages, reflecting history of seasonal labor and family movement. Many coastal households supplement their tourism income with remittances from relatives overseas, and return migration is evident in "heritage homes" built by emigrants in their ancestral communities. Festivals, football matches, and summer activities provide opportunities for diaspora members to reconnect with local communities, transforming the tourist season into a type of social reunion. Understanding Croatia's demographic profile and diaspora allows visitors to perceive tourism as part of broader tactics for navigating economic opportunity and identity across boundaries.
