Aiguille du Midi: The Cable Car to Heaven's Needle

The “Aiguille du Midi” (Needle of Midday) offers one of the world's most breathtaking cable car journeys, rocketing passengers from Chamonix at 1,035 meters to 3,842 meters (12,605 feet) in just 20 minutes—a vertical ascent of 2,807 meters that remains the world record for highest vertical rise. From the summit, you stand face-to-face with “Mont Blanc”, Western Europe's highest peak, separated only by glaciers and thin Alpine air.

The cable car's history is as dramatic as its engineering. Originally proposed around 1909, the “Téléphérique de l'Aiguille du Midi” didn't become operational until 1955, when it held the title of world's highest cable car for about two decades. The second section remains particularly audacious: 2,867 meters measured directly (2,500 meters horizontally) without any support pillar, cables spanning the void above glaciers to reach the upper station at 3,777 meters. An elevator inside the rock rises the final 42 meters to the summit at 3,842 meters.

The name derives from a church in Chamonix, from which the sun passes directly over the mountain peak at noon. The summit offers multiple terraces with 360-degree panoramic views of the Mont Blanc massif, including the Panoramic Mont-Blanc cable car to “Pointe Helbronner” in Italy—a 5-kilometre, 30-minute journey gliding over glaciers between France and Italy, one of the world's most spectacular gondola rides.

The attraction draws mountaineers starting Alpine routes at dawn, sharing morning cable cars with tourists. The site includes the famous "Step into the Void"—a glass viewing platform suspended over a 1,000-meter drop. Despite being a major tourist attraction, Aiguille du Midi closes from early November to late December for annual maintenance. Current adult tickets cost around *€75* for the round trip from Chamonix.

The best times to visit are early morning (before 9:30 AM opening) or late evening to avoid crowds and witness either sunrise or the golden hour light painting of “Mont Blanc”.
