Sintra: The Fairy-Tale Mountain Town Near Lisbon
Only a short train journey from the capital, Sintra is a hilltop sanctuary that feels like a physical manifestation of 19th-century Romanticism. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is an ethereal assemblage of palaces, castles, and mystical gardens set against the backdrop of the lush Serra de Sintra mountain range. Sintra’s crown jewel is the Pena National Palace, a building that challenges every convention of a historic monument. In the heart of the town stands the National Palace of Sintra, easily recognized by its massive twin conical chimneys that rise from the royal kitchens. Between exploring these landmarks, visitors can wander through cool, misty cobblestone streets and pause at traditional pastry shops to sample travesseiros (puff pastry filled with almond cream) and queijadas (sweet cheese tarts).
