The Habsburg dynasty shaped Austrian and European history for an extraordinary 645 years, from 1273 to 1918, creating an empire that stretched from Spain to Hungary and from Bohemia to Italy. This powerful family's influence transcended mere political control—they fundamentally shaped Austrian culture, architecture, education, and society through strategic marriages rather than military conquest. The Habsburgs' reign reached its zenith during the Holy Roman Empire period (1439–1806), when they held the imperial crown almost continuously. In Innsbruck, Emperor Maximilian I created royal residences including the Golden Roof.
